The Current OHCI Situation in Video.
Traditionally there have been two distinct categories of video editing solutions:
- Proprietary editing cards designed specifically for video editing. These are feature packed with real time video processing capabilities like Matrox's RT.X2.
- Standard OHCI cards or onboard ports which are inexpensive and widely used for DV (digital video) editing.
Standard OHCI
OHCI solutions are suitable for a wide variety of applications. They offer cross-platform OS compatibility (PC and Mac), DV camera device control as well as compatibility with a wide range of editing software applications. However OHCI has never provided compatibility or connectivity with widely used analogue video equipment and formats including S/VHS and Hi-8.
OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) is a digital transfer protocol allowing vendors of hardware devices and software programs, to communicate and plug into an open standard interface. OHCI devices include hard disk drives, scanners, printers and MP3 players. OHCI eliminates the need for specific device drivers for every product and the possible instability of such drivers. The initial problem with OHCI was the stability of this protocol particularly for DV editing. This stability issue has improved dramatically in the past few years and will continue to improve as this standard is developed further.
In short, OHCI is a standard protocol suitable for bi-directionally digital data transfer (i.e. DV) between a camera and the computer system. OHCI does not assist in processing the video once it has been captured.
How does ACEDVio enhance the function of the OHCI card?
ACEDVio takes the traditional functionality of OHCI boards and enhances this with Grass Valley’s traditional strengths in superior analog-to-DV and DV-to-analog video conversion.
ACEDVio features composite and y/c (analogue video) input and output capability (io).
- The analogue in (i) adds the versatility of converting analog video to DV, using the industry’s highest quality conversion technology. No other OHCI card can offer this.
- The analog output capability (O) of the ACEDVio allows output of DV back to analog video equipment as well as providing editors with a real time video preview to a TV or monitor while editing. Grass Valley is the only company with the expertise to bring analog output to this class of PCI board (OHCI).
- ACEDVIO together with Sony's Vegas or with Apple’s Final Cut Pro offers realtime analog video preview functionality not available on any other OHCI card.
- Almost all other OHCI vendors have no experience in video where Grass Valley provides technical support from both a video and OHCI perspective.
- ACEDVio combines the shear versatility and compatibility of OHCI with Grass Valley’s years of high-end video experience to deliver a reliable, real world solution for hobbyists and video professional alike.
